"A Cruel Angel's Thesis" (残酷な天使のテーゼ, Zankoku na Tenshi no Tēze?) is the theme song of the popular anime Neon Genesis Evangelion performed by Yoko Takahashi. It is used as the opening to the series, and two instrumental versions of it are played in the finale episode, "Take care of yourself." These are "The Heady Feeling of Freedom" and "Good, or Don't Be", scored for violin, piano and guitar. 'The Heady Feeling of Freedom" is a somber and reflective piece for bowed strings and guitar, while "Good, or Don't Be" is played to a light piano and guitar tone. Both are considerably different in feel from the more hard driving techno-dance original. A similar, but sparser, version can also be heard during the intermission between the two parts of Evangelion: Death and Rebirth.
Yōko Takahashi (高橋 洋子, Takahashi Yōko?, born August 28, 1966) is a Japanese singer, perhaps best known for performing A Cruel Angel's Thesis (残酷な天使のテーゼ, Zankoku na Tenshi no Tēze), the opening theme song of the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. She also performs the closing theme, an "acid bossa" version of "Fly Me to the Moon" and Tamashii no Rufuran (魂のルフラン, Tamashii no Rufuran, Refrain of Soul), the closing theme of Evangelion: Death and Rebirth. She also recently performed "Metamorphose," the opening theme to studio Gainax's 20th anniversary series, This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, the ending theme Yoake Umarerekuru Shōjo (夜明け生まれ来る少女, The Girl who was Born at Dawn) for the anime Shakugan no Shana (灼眼のシャナ, Blazing-Eyed Shana) and the opening theme Aoki Flamme for Pumpkin Scissors (パンプキン・シザーズ, Panpukin Shizāzu.
The Neon Genesis Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン, Shin Seiki Evangerion) franchise is an umbrella of Japanese media properties generally owned by the anime studio Gainax. It has grossed over $16 billion since 1995. The central (and original) works of the franchise feature an apocalyptic mecha action story which revolves around the efforts by the paramilitary organization Nerv to fight monstrous beings called Angels. Nerv's primary weapon against the Angels are giant mecha called Evangelions which are piloted by select teenagers, one of whom, Ikari Shinji, is the primary protagonist. Other works deviate from this theme to varying degrees, focusing more on romantic interactions between the characters, side stories which did not appear in the original works, and/or reimaginings of the conflicts from the original works.

Thank you so much! I'm 12 years old and just like you, I tried to play this by ear. It sounded almost perfect but there was few mistakes. But when I saw you play I got the notes right! Now all I need to do is memorize this and I'll be able to play this song in my school recital! Thanks again!
