It is interesting to here two people who have been advocates in being creative with mathematics in the classroom - reflecting on the fact the emphasis might have been put on the CREATIVE rather than the MATHEMATICS in the classroom.
There has always been a tendency in teachers to reward "pretty" work over "mathematical" work. The creativity has to be there in building the activities that lead the student to the ideas and tools we have developed to solve problems.
