1st June 08: US motorist crashes into Mexican bicycle race/ride, near Mexican border with Texas. One cyclist killed, ten others injured. Driver arrested and charged. Footage from Kare11.com

The riders were 15 minutes into the 34km race between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.

Driver Juan Campos, 28, was charged with killing Alejandro Alvarez, 37. Campos was said by police to have been drunk and asleep at the wheel when he ploughed into the cyclists.

In stills at the start of the video, cyclists and bicycles are seen flying through the air. A helmet from one of the cyclists is also seen in mid-air.

I raced bikes in the USA from 1973 to 1981. I quit because it seemed like every year, someone I knew was getting killed by someone in a car running over them. I had several close calls and just decided to try another sport. I started riding again and just about two weeks ago, a mom in a Honda minivan came closer to hitting me than anyone in the previous 30 years. All those years of dodging rednecks in tow trucks and lawyers in their BMWs and I almost get killed by a car pool mom.

Are you stupid? Do you know the drinking age in Canada and the UK and France? Do you know which country has the strongest drinking laws among all of the industrialized nations? Do you know which country has the highest alcohol caused accidents among the industrialized nations? Clearly stricter alcohol control does not lead to less abuse and accidents.
