Tried by Fire is the true-life story of a boy from the Fort Greene projects of Brooklyn who grew up to become a major player in the dangerous but opportunity-filled drug world of 1970s New York. From a young age, Kenneth KG Gilmore was surrounded by savvy hustlers who taught him the unwritten rules of the streets. Under the mentorship of this powerful group of black gangsters—importers of heroin from Hong Kong—KG quickly rose to the top of the drug world and became rich beyond his wildest dreams.

Operating under a low profile, KG worked hard to remain anonymous to the authorities and the world outside of his tight-knit group of gangsters. At the top of a drug world that included Frank Lucas and Nicky Barnes, KG and his crew netted upwards of one million dollars a month. All of that changed, however, the night KG murdered Ted Gross, aid to former New York City mayor, John V. Lindsay. Gross, a crooked politician whose extravagant tastes far exceeded his government salary, was secretly attempting to finance his flashy lifestyle as a drug dealer by short-changing KG. KG could not let this impudence go unpunished. One night, while riding in the back of Grosss luxury Centurion, KG opened fire on the politician and his mistress, killing Gross and injuring the woman.

After the murder, KGs world crumbled around him. He packed a quarter of a million dollars into a Louis Vuitton case and told his wife that he was going away for a long time. He was arrested, convicted, and after five sensational trials, sentenced to twenty-five years to life in prison.

While in prison, KG found a new calling and began to fight against what he saw as a racist prison system that held down many notorious prisoners, including Tupac Shakur. Drawing inspiration and hope from his wife, KG underwent a dynamic reformation. He studied literature and the law, enrolled in every class and workshop offered by the prison system, and was elected to the Inmate Liason Committee. His status as a jailhouse lawyer made him one of the most powerful inmates in the New York prison system. Living up to his title, KG filed lawsuits both on behalf of himself and his fellow prisoners who struggled against a system that refused to grant their parole. Finally after more than thirty-one years in the prison, KG won his long fought battle and gained his freedom.

Tried by Fire is the epic story of a mans deep personal transformation and his journey through two worlds: one of extravagant drugs and money, the other a hell on earth.
