Running Free is the accumulation of six weeks of intense filming and editing, blood, pain, joy, sweat, fear and above all things, pure freedom. So often people see free running as something other than an art, Running Free tries to break that idea by giving you a first person account of the art.

The film was born when I happened to mention to my friend, David Stewart, that I was a keen free runner, he mentioned to me that he was a keen film maker, the two minds clicked and we decided to make this film. We spent two weeks writing scripts and coming up with ideas and concepts but we just came out with rubbish. So we decided to just film some footage of me free running and that's when the penny dropped, how could we possibly come up with an idea for a film about something so free?

We continued to film for three weeks till I sustained an injury to my coccyx (you can see the accident at 1:35) which put me out of action for a number of weeks. In this time we met up to chat about the film and David had the idea to interview me. I had not planned any of what I was going to say which I think really works for the film, it's a free runner talking about free running in a very honest, off the cuff way. The track, Burial by Forgive just seemed to feel right when we put it in the film and there were no questions as to whether it should be in the film or not.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making the film. Our friends who helped critique the first drafts. Hyperdub for giving us permission to use the music free of charge. William Bevan for writing Forgive, seriously, a better track for the video could never be found. Phil Hunter for teaching me what free running was all about. And finally, spontaneity, for giving us brilliant audio for the video.

All filming was done by David Stewart, I co-directed the video with him and the free runner was myself. Copyright is under both our names. Permission was granted by Hyperdub to use the track, Forgive by Burial in the film in September 2009.

  • an excellent video. you do yourself credit

how did you manage to get the area free of other people?

  • Patience, and also the fact that the areas aren't very busy in general.

  • Nicely done. Good to see a video that's different

  • That was the whole idea, something a bit different so I'm glad you liked that aspect of the vid.

  • Brilliant, Man loved it totally insipiring and the way i feel when i run and i am not really that good but it gives me the inspiration to keep on training thanks man 5/5

  • The trick is not to compare yourself to others, compare yourself to yourself, could you do a vault when you first started free running? Bet you can now.

  • You say.. "I guess:" wayyy too much man. You don't sound assertive and you don't seem like you really know why you're doing it.

  • Haha you have a funny voice.

  • Yeah I thought it was good as well because it points out that doing freerunning helps you blend out everyone around you.
