  • Record salmon runs on the coast of BC in 2009. Salmon farms are still up.

    I think you are misguided on your "facts" about salmon farms.

  • @foxshots....Thanks for the info. The sooner these fish farms are shut down the better. You have evidence here that eating farmed salmon is a health hazard. The ravings of schmarly2007 are proof that it causes brain damage.

  • UPDATE!!!!! (it's 2010). Now we have record returns of sockeye salmon in British Columbia. Great pink salmon and chinook salmon too.

    So, it's clear this "scare" was a trumped up tactic to try to scare the consumer away from a healthy food source - farm-raised salmon. Just shows Morton is wrong. the only thing Morton said that is true, " I dont have a great set of credentials."

  • If Alex Morton new her science, she would not have to use circus act mud throwing campaign's to get attention.

  • I took lessons from Alex Morton's writing. I am sure you know her. The US has funded millions to her to discredit farmed salmon and promote wild salmon. aka Alaska salmon. She uses words like "may contribute" as I did in my last post. Problem is.. Many readers will take the comment as fact and not something that could be studied to find the fact. To sound like Morton again. Stop Ranching Alaska and get out. How does it feel?

  • Alaska chinook salmon are on the endangered species list according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game web site. Horrific overharvest in commercial, recreational, and subsistence fisheries, as well as devastating ((hatchery-produced fish, disease, release)) and other man-made factors such as destructive water diversion, may contribute to the decline of the chinook salmon stock.

  • At first, environmentalists said farmed salmon contained dangerous levels of cancer-causing PCBs and shouldn’t be consumed by pregnant women – until it turned out that wild salmon (declared safe by Health Canada) has even higher levels of PCBs. Then they warned that escaped salmon would interbreed with wild salmon and produce Frankenfish. The scare that finally stuck was sea lice (even though there’s no good evidence that sea lice are a problem).

  • Fraser sockeye runs have been declining steadily since the early 1990s along with the increase in salmon farms and farmed production. Gail Shea should be ashamed of this.
