The Blue Lagoon is a 1980 American romance and adventure film directed by Randal Kleiser. The screenplay by Douglas Day Stewart was based on the novel The Blue Lagoon by Henry De Vere Stacpoole. The film stars Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins. The original music score was composed by Basil Poledouris and the cinematography was by Néstor Almendros.
The film tells the story of two young children marooned on a tropical island paradise in the South Pacific. With neither the guidance nor the restrictions of society, emotional feelings and physical changes arise as they reach puberty and fall in love.

They're alive. According to the book, they live. The only reason that they show up dead in the sequel is because a story line was needed fir the next movie. Also, if you remember correctly, different people found them in the sequel, not a father looking for his son and niece.

They are dead. When they were children and they were with that man and when she ate the berry but he got her to spit it out she started to cry, then he said, don't eat those because you will fall asleep and never wake up, and that's what he meant.

The man asks "Are they dead?" the sailor replies "No sir, they're asleep" so from what I understand they aren't dead and the berries weren't poisons.
