Fire at Leland Olds Station

Local firefighters spent about three hours putting out a fire on the Leland Olds Station plant site on October fourteenth.
About eight o-clock at night, a local resident saw fire and called plant operators.
After confirming the fire plant officials called Mercer County 9-1-1 and went into emergency procedure mode.
The fire started in the building where sections of fiberglass liner were being fabricated.
This building was built by the contractor working on the liner the building was so they could continue fabricating the liners throughout the winter.
The liners are for the new scrubber chimney they will carry the flue gas from the scrubber through the chimney.
This fabrication building sits about a quarter-mile southeast of the power plant.
The fire was mainly contained to this building and did not spread to other structures.
Power plant operation was never affected.
The Stanton and Hazen fire departments were on the scene right away.
These fire departments are run by volunteers and Basin Electric is very grateful for their hard work in containing the fire.
Before Basin Electric started on the scrubber project, we developed an emergency action plan.
In fact, the Hazen fire department toured the area last spring to familiarize themselves with hazards or chemicals that might be encountered in an emergency. Again, we thank these volunteers.
The fire was put out after about three hours.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and no damage estimate is available yet.
About a dozen residents homes were evacuated as a precaution.
By one in the morning, the Mercer County Sheriff let them know it was safe to return home.
The safety of our employees and the members of the surrounding communities was Basin Electrics primary concern and we are happy to report no one was hurt.
