'Song of Spring Cicada' performed by 'Folk Art Troup of Liping Dongzu County' from guizhou province, china.

'Dong Zu Da Ge' means 'the great/old song of Dong People'. It is a type of chorus singing without instrumental accompaniment. the multipal layers of vocal cords and the unique singing technique carry out the charm of a haunting harmony.

There's an old saying among Dong people- "Food are for building the body, songs for soul", singing plays an important part in their social and spiritual life.

Here is the lyrics of the song
translated as follows, hope you enjoy the song like i do:

"Come listen to my mimicry of Cicadas' singing, hope everyone come to join too
...linge-linge-la linge-linge-le...

Our voices are not better than that of cicadas, but we too have passion for life, we sing for our life, sing for our youth
... linge-linge-la, linge-linge-le..."

  • Miao and Dong are different tribe.

  • The dong are just basically COPYING everything from the Miao people. In this video, they are wearing traditional MIAO necklaces. I thought this video was supposed to showcase THEIR original dong culture? It's a good thing they're not wearing the Miao silver headdresses though. I swear, the dong people are putting more and more silver jewelries in their hair too. They try so hard to get more praise and attention. Everything they got is from being strongly influenced by the MIAO.

  • i agree, Tai/dai is a big tribe, consider their major population in thailand, they evolve their history along with the mainstream civil code of the region. Miao (Hmong/ Meng) refer to the ethnic minorities that dwell in mountains regions in china and other southeast asian countries. Mythologically, they are the descends of chi-you 蚩尤.

  • Sometimes, I feel like the Dong have nothing similar to the Tai People. They live among the Miao People and dress just like them.

  • The Dong and Miao live peacefully together. The Dong are part of the Tai People. They speak a Tai language however their culture resemble much closer to the Miao(Hmong).
