On January 8, 2009, before a hearing on the devastating TVA billion-gallon coal ash spill in eastern Tennessee, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) demolishes the "clean coal" myth. Alexander tells Knoxville's WVLT-TV that "coal is a dirty business."
Cleaning up the spill is estimated to take over $250 million and at least two years, although as yet TVA's Ed Kilgore doesn't have an actual plan for the clean up.
After two earlier leaks in recent years, the TVA dismissed a $25 million plan to shore up the sludge pond's retaining walls as "too expensive."
