Faith in God as Other and asserting one’s own power are not mutually exclusive when we understand God as being not only the Other outside of ourselves, but also as being God within ourselves, indeed, our own higher, truer Self. Bertie’s faith in God eventually lead him to embrace his own higher, truer Self, and his struggles were truly the stuff of heroic, mythic battle (think St. George and the dragon).
Thank you again for this inspiring post.

At the same time, as you point out, Bertie’s struggle was essentially a psychological battle to find and assert his own true power, and to overcome the internalized dragons of his father’s and brother’s abuses. Like all good healers and spiritual teachers, Lionel guided Bertie to find his own true power within.

Yes, Bertie had a deep, personal Christian faith, as documented in numerous biographies, most notably Sarah Bradford’s “The Reluctant King” (1989). Sometimes he fervently prayed for God’s help to the point of tears. Whether you intended it or not, your use of Leonard Cohen’s “If it be your will” well characterizes his pleas to a loving God.

@BenLyingToUs1 Aw, thank you!
Nicely done. I, too, was moved by this film as I had to deal with a speech problem back in school and can only imagine how difficult it must have been for a member of royalty to overcome it. Colin Firth brought this struggle across so painfully well. A beautiful performance from a highly underestimated, oh so talented actor.

This is beautiful, and thank you.
King George VI, Bertie, was a man of faith. The petitions echoed in these prayerful lyrics were undoubtedly prayed by him as he heroically struggled to overcome his stammer and lead his people in heroic resistance to the Nazis. Fortunately for all of us, God responded to his prayer, George found his voice and his courage, and the world was saved from Adolf Hitler.

@jmKelley09 Thank you for commenting!
I didn't know about his faith - even though it makes sense he would have been a believer, come to think of it.
What I had in mind with this video was how he sought permission from others to have a voice. He thought his brother and his father had taken his voice from him and expected Lionel to be the person to give it back. What he didn't understand is how he has always had that voice inside him, and Lionel was there to show him that.
