@canadianwritingchik the problem is that les mis isent meant to be clean and proper.

This is BAD.

@allthatfun Sure, I get that. Believe me, as a Christian I don't believe in censorship either and the choices we had to make in changing the production were not ones that we made happily. It simply boiled down to a difficult decision between doing it with the original text or (in the worst case scenario) having our program shut down or at least significantly neutered. Given the end result - the show was hugely successful - I'd make that compromise again if needed, although (again) not happily.

@brokenstove LOL.. No I get they are high school kids and I have no real issue with their singing or acting ability though it too was lacking. What I do have an issue with is censorship of any kind. How would you feel about the offensive passages of the bible being changed ? It would change the entire message as does this version of Les Mis. The entire feeling of the play is altered. What message have you sent these kids by altering this play ? Very sad....

@allthatfun You seem to be missing a couple of points here. One: these were high school kids - amateur performers - many of whom were inspired to go on into a career in theatre. This show was an opportunity for them to experience something special and to a person, none of them would say their experience was sullied due to the alteration of a couple of words. Two: don't worry - we're Canadian so I promise we won't come to your country and change any of your lyrics.

@brokenstove I know this is a two year old comment but I just had to respond. If I were the director of this production I would kill myself. What a shabby performance. To change the words of an incredible work of art should be a crime, if your audience is so unsophisticated then don't do this play but don't destroy it just to say you did Les Miserables. This is a perfect example why Christians must not ever be allowed to have political power in this country.

Since it seems like people want to give you a hard time. This was good. And the lyric changing is nice, it keeps it as clean as Les Mis can get. And I understand it very well, I've worked backstage at four plays at a Christian school, and yeah people, lines do get changed! Live with it! Do you know, most playwrights, if you write in and explain why you're changing a few words they understand, just as long as your not Broadway or some 'professional' place putting it on.
