Here I am worming my horse this morning. He hates it, and it used to be impossible with such a tall horse. He would put his head up so high I could not reach with the tube dewormer. I started hooking the little finger of the HAND HOLDING THE WORMER into his halter so no matter what he did, the tube was still touching his mouth. When he finally relaxed, I would click him, take it away and give him a treat. When it was time for the real worming day, he knew what to do. He's been a trooper ever since, and it seems like telling him first it's to make him feel better and he gets his grain right after helped him "get it" and be willing to have something so nasty put into his mouth. Watch his expression when I am talking to him.
This is not the best example of the technique, partly because the wormer tube is in the dark and hard to see and partly because his halter is too loose and he felt it and lifted his head. Also, I did not get it all in on the first shot--I did not have the wormer tube positioned far enough back in his mouth and some got on his lips. Here we are using EQUIMAX wormer, which has ivermectin and praziquantel dewormer agents in it.
In April, I used Panacur Powerpac, which has to be done EVERY DAY for 5 days in a row! Red thought he was being punished for something. By day two he was suspicious when I put his halter on him before breakfast. By day three he was walking out of his stall. I had to wait him out, until he made the decision to come back and be wormed if he wanted to eat. I think it was a very hard decision for him, but it's worth the wait to have a willing participant.
It will be two months before I worm him again, but when I do, I'll make sure the lighting and technique is better so you can see a more ideal situation.
