I can't speak for the almighty, but I will say this: if an atheist dies and ends up going to heaven or wherever and is judged, then that atheist should be judged on his ACTIONS toward others and NOT be judged on simply questioning life or if he or she desired something because that part of it is, as I say, hoo haa.
Whether you believe or don't believe, the importan thing is to be good to, as they say, your "neighbor" and to not hurt anyone regardless. I do believe we are judged SOMEWHAT atfer death and I mean SOMEWHAT, BUT one should be judged on actions, not simple thoughts or beliefs, so long as no one is hurt, know what I mean and when we all die in the end, we'll see who was right.....or we won't see period. ;-)
In response to Dawkin's last question, I would say that I stopped believing in telepathy and religion when I was 16. I remember being in my school library during a free period and I had finished reading "The Science of Star Trek" when I went to put it back on the shelf. While in the sciences section, I came across Cosmos by Carl Sagan and started flipping through it because I liked the pictures. I started reading and by the time I finished, I was an atheist.
Living a lie is not necessarily a bad thing. One day you will die and you consciousness will cease to exist. So what if you lived a comforting lie all those years. Both the person living the comfortable lie and the person who knows the truth end up in the exact same place. Nothingness.
I know, but sometimes I find it strange how people can make them belief something like heaven, I mean the concept of reincarnation seems MUCH more probable if I had to pick an afterlife theory. But I also know a religious family and the parents take BIG risks for them selfs AND their children, because they "leave it in the hands of god", they don't go out and make something from their life because only the afterlife counts for them... In that form it becomes very sad to see someone religious.
just out of curiosity, what makes reincarnation seem much more probable then heaven? Both have no evidence to validate them. Both cannot be explained by any natural process.
Sure, the religious one and the nonreligious one will both just end up dead, but at least the nonreligious one can look back at his life and hopefully be pleased with everything he accomplished, whereas a lot of religious people have the feeling their lives have just begun and they didn't find the need to accomplish anything other then NOT doing things that will get you into hell...
A lot of lives are just wasted because of religion in my mind, but to a certain degree of belief religion is ok.
How is religion o.k. in spite of the things you said? You got a good point and then went on to being politically correct. Religion is sometimes a soft blanket. When you think "oh well, this life is not the only one and I'll get a better one afterwards" you tend to neglect this one. There are some believers that think along this line. I used to be one of them a long time ago.
I think that people are rather naive ignorant or stupid ... one of these so called "qualities" are required in order to believe in religion or in any sort of nonsense that has no critical thinking behind it not to mention any proof. If you try and prove people that what they believe in is fake and that they are delusional..they will atack you and say any nonsense to try and defend it. I think this is an endless debate because you can bring any argument you want an idiot will only evade it.
