I state proudly that I am intolerant.

the awesome man who sent me the book:
http://www.youtube.com/user/nonreligionist

"A word thrown around all to often is "intolerance". Something that people frequently accuse atheists of. People hate the idea of intolerance; they do so because on the surface it seems like a terrible thing, but if you look closer, intolerance is what makes up our society and, indeed, our nation. Laws are based on the intolerance of crime, our basic moral code is based on intolerance of things we consider to be bad. One more thing that needs to be added to this list of intolerance is religion. We've seen it to be detrimental, we know it to be the cause of hatred, ignorance, bigotry, and countless crimes against humanity, so why tolerate such a thing? People do so because the believe religion deserves respect when in reality, that's the farthest thing from the truth."

-Excerpt from a speech I gave for class.

  • This is my favorite of the old vids :). I completely, like, have a point haha

  • Intolerance isnt bad? Tell that to the families of the people murdered by the KKK or the families or the Jewish people shot, burned, gased whatever, by hitler. Intolerance is the fuel that driven over 90% of all the wars on the planet. So, how can something that causes os much death and violence be good?

  • that's not intolerance, it's prejudice. durrrr

  • I agree with you that there are things we shouldn't tolerate (like murder, as you mentioned) and I'm glad that you love everybody.

Now let's say theoretically you had the power to ban people from practicing religion. Would you?

I'm religious myself but I'd never impose my beliefs on others, nor ban irreligion., so I'm just curious where you draw the line on intolerance.

    Thanks.

  • I would never ban peoples' freedom of religion, speech, press, media, etc. I'm not out to restrict rights, because can make intelligent decisions themselves.

  • "Intolerance" is one of those words that are meaningless without a modifier. Intolerant of what? Most people mean "intolerant of other religions, political opinions, races..", which is not such a good thing. Other examples of words that are meaningless in isolation are "equality" and "freedom". For example, when people talk about "equality", they mean "equal rights before the law", and by freedom, they mean freedom from the kinds of abuses traditionally commited by governments and tyrants.

  • I'll admit religion has flaws, but only because humanity has flaws, I understand that you're against religion but you ONLY see the flaws, what about the good things - my church comforts the sick and dying, feeds the hungry, gives warm beds to the homeless. you have to see the good in peoples faith in god

  • In other words, you don't tolerate/sanction stupidity. No-one does. It's a matter of perspective. The broader the perspective the more illuminated ones personal point of view become.

Like you, after reading that book...
