Iranian Protesters take over UK Embassy in Tehran

Foreign Secretary William Hague tonight warned Iran it faced 'serious consequences' after protesters took six British embassy staff hostage after stormed two diplomatic compounds in Tehran

The rampaging mob smashed windows and hurled petrol bombs before burning the British flag in a protest against sanctions imposed by Britain.




Britain said it was outraged by the attacks on its embassy compounds while the White House condemned in 'the strongest terms' the unrest.

Prime Minister David Cameron chaired a meeting of the Government's Cobra security committee this afternoon and the Iranian charge d'affaires was summoned to the Foreign Office.

Mr Hague said Iran had 'committed a grave breach' of the Vienna Convention, which demands protection of diplomats and diplomatic premises under all circumstances.
