  • The A6 does not have "guns" it is (was) a medium attack aircraft. The video is derived from a nose mounted FLIR attached to a analog taping system hence the poor quality.

  • @ldvictor Actually, it is an A-6E TRAM armament delivery recording/weapon system video. For the sake of laymen who don't know this, hence "gun camera". The poor quality comes from this VHS tape being dubbed over movies sent from somebody's wife on the carrier before I got it in Riyadh.

  • Quite a bit of AAA fire from what I saw, and I think I saw a SAM beinf fired at 0:59 from the lower left corner where the first explosions were.

  • @fulcrumSMT29 Good observations...

  • The A-6E doesn't have a "Gun Camera"... or a Gun..

It has FLIR with laser designation so it can guide its own LGBs.

The best bomber that NAVY has ever flown

    EFR Baby

  • Roger that, Rev...It is listed as "Gun Camera" because many of my visitors don't know what a TRAM, an "Armament Delivery Recording" or a "Weapon System Video" is.

  • While the A-6 had no internal guns, it could be fitted with gun pods (I'm told the Marines used them). The VTR system on these things was ancient! Picture a large reel-to-reel system that used a big roll of video tape that was something like 2" wide (if I remember correctly). But the Hughes TRAM turret was nice. F-111's had a FLIR pod that didn't swivel when it reached nadir (like ours did), so the picture went inverted when you flew past the target. Our picture stayed right side up.

  • Indeed, TeamVirility!
