Hollywood star and goodwill ambassador of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Angelina Jolie, met India's Junior Foreign Minister Anand Sharma in national capital New Delhi on Sunday (November 05).
Jolie, who has been to more than 20 countries since becoming a UNHCR goodwill ambassador five years ago, is in India for a film shooting with partner Brad Pitt and son Maddox.
Jolie who met Myanmar and Sikh Afghan refugees on Saturday lauded New Delhi's role in handling refugees over the years.
"We spoke about refugee of course and yesterday I had the privilege of meeting with Afghan refugees and refugees of Burma. I have also, since I have been here, spent time with India people and we spoke about the concerns for disabled people, children, orphans. The wonderful thing that I have learned since I have been in India is there are many needs for your own people and yet you have all been so gracious and been so open to many many refugees over the years. I think probably the largest influx of refugees that may be as anybody has ever handled over the years," she said after her meeting with Sharma.
She also commended India as a nation providing religious and cultural freedom.
"Another important thing is that always encouraging people from different parts of the world and different religions and cultures to maintain who they are and their own language and that is it shouldn't be rare but it is really rare and India should be commended for all that is done and I am grateful to the Indian people...We have agreed to work together," she added.
Anand Sharma, India's Junior Foreign Minister said he appreciated Jolie's role as a goodwill ambassador.
"We also talked about the Indian traditions and also the great influence of Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy of peace and non-violence which continues to be very much valuable when we look at the conflict, violence and bloodshed in which many regions are trapped. We acknowledge with appreciation the good work which Angelina Joie has done in different regions of the world to help the refugees' right from Darfur, to Cambodia to Ivory Coast to the other parts of the world," he said.
Later in on Sunday Jolie also made several visits to refugees around New Delhi.
Her first stop was at the home of a Burmese refugee mother of three small children before visiting a women's protection center run by the UNHCR.
As Jolie listened to the travails of a Myanmar refugee, language barrier ceased to exist as her five-year-old son Maddox played on the floor of the center with other children.
Asian politicians pushing for democracy and human rights in Myanmar appealed in October for the U.N. Security Council to take concrete action against the Asian nation's military government.
The Security Council held its first official session on Myanmar in October, at which the United States and its allies advocated a resolution to pressure the former Burma to stop jailing political opponents, persecuting minorities and flooding the region with refugees.
The military has run the Southeast Asian nation under various guises since 1962 and the current group of generals has been in power since 1988. They officially changed the English version of the country's name from Burma in 1989.
They put charismatic opposition leader Aung San Suu Ki, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, under house arrest and many of her followers in prison after her National League for Democracy won a landslide election victory in 1990.
Jolie also made a visit to a Khalsa Diwan Welfare Society, an organization run by and for Sikh Afghan refugees and funded by Australia, where she interacted with women who learning tailoring to earn a living.

  • What i absolutely love about her is her compassion and kindness that stays the same for any human being from any part of the world and thats a very important lesson that we must learn from.We must help others who need us they are just like us and we could have been in their position and we know we would thought of ourselves worthy of help so why not help them.

  • @electricprunes1 She has been a UN Ambassador for Refugee's year's. She give's 1/3 or her salary to charity...She is well traveled, well versed in world affair's...for you to claim she is self serving shows your own ignorance. Not many Actor's are so devoted. I think your accessment is riddled in some misplaced hate for a loving mother of six children.

  • Ive seen in another Clip of you Angelina Joli that you have gone to Afghanistan and had some interview with Afghan Asylm which I deeply apreciat it and many, many thanks from you.

  • Thanks Jolie for concerning about Afghan and am so greatful for convaying the problems that we are facing. not only us but Barmis as well. this is the fact what you have told about being greciuse of Indian.

To add one thing apart from this I am one of your fan:-)

  • how nice that once the "show" is over she can go home to any 1 of her palatial mansions to live a life of great luxury & ease. Anyone who has never lived the life of those who suffer & die for the want of a simple cup of safe water can never understand their plight. she's a self serving hyopritical fraud or she would have parted with her multi millions to aid these ppl- she claims to feel such empathy for- long ago. Multi millions she can easily earn again & again just own her name alone.

  • she is a class act. Love what she does with the children. Her orphanages are top class

  • Thank you so much for sharing....

  • i love her!
