A short shifter just shortens the throw required to shift gear to gear. Getting a shorter gear shift knob (while much simpler) can also help a little.

I might be a total n00b asking this, but whats the advantage of the short shifter... how does it work, ie. does it change the shifting points in the rev range an also how much does it cost?
Is it a valuable mod (money to performance ratio) to consider buying for REAL-WORLD driving [which excludes any kind of track or drag racing] bar the few street races off the lights?
