'Spain' (Chick Corea) - jazz piano lesson. I did this about 7 years ago, and it has been kicking around the web since then. I recorded the bass and drum tracks first, and improvised the piano part later.
I tried another method of annotating, using a 'spotlight' effect to highlight the section of music being referred to in the text.
Again, the audio on this video has been spoilt - on the first solo section, there is severe 'clipping' that causes distortion at the loudest levels. And when the bass and drums enter there is a curious loud / soft 'pumping' in the volume levels. It is worse when using the 'High quality' option
http://youtube.com/watch?v=EsBsq0Qeeus&fmt=18
and you need this to see the notes and annotations clearly.
The solution is to go to my web site
http://www.bushgrafts.com and download an excellent quality video from there - and the 'backing track' I did - bass and drums - to play along with (they are free!)

  • I like your solo lines. There's some things I don't really agree with though:

    - The way you play roots on downbeats when clearly in bass-player's range. (eg: 1:22 onwards)

    - The way you play the little interlude, it's not very solid nor accurate. (eg:2:56)

    - The chart is not really very accurate. I understand it's MIDI interpretation of what you're playing but at times it's really bad, especially in the solo lines.

    - The C#7 chords should be C#7b5.

Other than that, you're on your way. Cheers!

  • what software do you use?

  • hey, is it possible to get your tracks without the bass?

  • extremely helpful. best tutorial for a difficult to learn head, which for some reason is not in any of my 5 real books. thanks a zillion.

  • This video was super helpful. I've been trying to figure out the interlude part for a few weeks now, and I'm glad I finally found some notation for it.

  • this dude is dope... great stuufffffff i lovvvvvvve ur comping styleeeeee

  • Hear my vesa .... I created a medley of SPAIN + THE CHICKEN. Hope you enjoy! go there.....

  • You mean this whole time that sound, or more technical terms, that scale I was trying so hard to find was actually just the half/diminished scale? EEE I feel so dumb now

  • The 3rd chord sounds more like a Bsus4.

  • My favorite Chick Corea piece. Loved it when it was sung by the great Al Jarreau.
