My mother has been in the hospital and the rehab for COPD, Emphysema, Congestive Heart Failure and a Cardiac Arrest since February 10, 2011.
She is a smoker. when she was in the hospital she didn't have access to it.

Whilst in the rehab, they let her go outside and somehow she has cigarettes. either from bumming them off of others, or calling a friend of hers to bring a pack over.

I will not buy them for her anymore.

I had taken her out of the rehab for an hour and a half today to get her some fried scallops that she'd been whining about. The entire time through dinner, she was telling me to take her to go get her cigarettes.

I pay all of the bills and also use her SS money to pay her insurance and everything. I've been struggling to make ends meet. I cannot afford to buy her $9 smokes... nor do I want her to keep smoking.

She's coming home from the rehab in 6 days and it's going to be ridiculous to deal with her withdrawal.

Anyway.... I dropped her back off at the rehab after she kept calling me the C word repeatedly and saying how fat I am... so as I was inside getting her wheelchair, I come out to see her rummaging through my pocketbook to steal money from me.

It's gotten ridiculous.

SO she called and left THIS message after I'd left.

  • Reminds me of my grandma. She called me all kinds of lovely names while I was keeping her cigarette free. ;) One time I swear she pimped herself to the old man next door for a cigarette.

  • @gigglechickdotcom:

I understand your reasons, & I think what you are trying to do shows that you truly love your mom. The problem is, this isn't your decision. If she doesn't want to quit, you cannot force her. I know it is hell to watch a loved one suffer, but all you will do by trying to force this issue is destroy the relationship you have with your mom. Fried scallops aren't healthy, either, by the way. ;) it's a hard position we're in with older parents. Hang in there, love.
