Ok Folks, this was a filmed attempt of lighting a fire using primitive techniques. The main aim this time was to use woods found on location. I was impressed but the result. The video is not complete as I hadn't any other hand to turn the cam in direction of the fire ^^!

Music is from the band WAYLANDER!

  • how do you make a "tropical version " of the firebow...cuz there's no willow and birch in the tropics

  • @philarmy540 I'd go with bamboo or just try to find wood I assume are workin. When training with a lot of different woods, you can then more easily know which are OK and which aren't for firebow method

  • hey what if i used hardware store wood cause isent that soft anough for the board and soem harder kind of wood for the spindle?

and how do i know if i have the right wood i dont know witch wood is witch so how can i find it

  • Sorry for my mistake, a friend just told me that Dry Willow works well.

Other woods you can use are: Beech, poplar, Hazel tree.

The hard-soft wood theory is in the ideal case. when you can't, if you don't give up to quickly, it will work with both board and spindle made of the same wood!

    Good luck!

  • thanks for the vid i am trying to do it but i can not seem to get the right wood all i get is a little brown dust and it does not smoke there is a willow tree in my subdivision but i dont want to get caught cutting a pice down from it .HELP AND COMMENT BACK PLEASE

  • Don't hope you'll succed the first time. Train, try and don't give up! and keep me informed ^^! Cheers

  • Impressive vid Thanks for sharing :D

Reminds me of good ol' times in da woods with my friends... :')

  • man that noise is bad

  • hey but i haave a tree in my back yard but i dont know what knind it is and can i use like a 2 by 1 inch piece of wood for the harth froma hardware store so sorry for all of the comment i just think that your bow drill was the beast it was so quick and fast but i was just wondering

  • Sorry for the delay, I was in the Bavarian forest in germany ^^! I wrote a longer answer but due to a problem of connection I lost it. I'm not sure willow is the best, but if you find a dry piece just try. Training is the key for that fire. When you got smoke, you have to continue drilling a lot. It could even take more than 15 min. A soft fireplate is one of the keys.

You could try "Genévrier" (this is the french name of a tree, but I don't know the english name).
