This is a clip from a documentary created by one of our groups which participated in the chadar or the Frozen River Trek a few years ago.
Walking in temperatures of -30 to -35 degrees on a blanket of ice at 3500m through a gorge in the Indian Himalaya (Ladakh) is sure to transport you into a world written about only in fairy tales. This ancient Zanskari winter route is gaining popularity as one of the best places to explore and visit during the winters. A must for people yearning for a unique challenging expedition style adventure.
One for the seasoned trekker, this trip which spans around 20 days starts from Chilling on the frozen Zanskar River and traverses all the way into Padum, the heart of the Zanskar Valley and back. This trek is possible only between early Jan to mid-Feb when the 'veil of Ice' over the river is hard and suitable for trekking.
This trek needs ultimate caution and safety for operating and easily ranks among the toughest trips in our calendar - a classic winter expedition!
Note: The Zanskar river is also a popular river for rafting in the summers (July, August) and is a class 4 section. The Zanskar gorge is popularly referred to as the 'Grand Canyon of Asia'
