Change Of Heart ~ Ep. 6

Demi's POV.

Its been two months and I've finally decided to meet these people. I was really nervous because I wasnt so sure on how each of them would react. First, I'd meet Selena, the girl who has Sterling's kidneys. Tiffany was able to get some info on her and she'd scribbled down each of their addresses on the sheet of paper that I was holding in my hand. I look up at the house and only one light upstairs was on. I take a deep breath and get out of my car. The house was nice, it was painted light blue and had a nice yard in the front. Toys were spread out acorss the porch. A dollhouse, a couple of barbie dolls, coloring books, crayons, etc. I step onto the welcome mat and ring the doorbell, holding my breath. A few seconds later, a girl with black hair, shorts and a striped red and blue tank top, opens the door. She looks at me and I stare back at her. Just thinking that she had a part of Sterling in her body made me feel a little weird.
"Hi.. Um.. if you're looking for my parents, they're out and--" she starts off.
But I interrupt her, making her stop talking. "A-are you Selena?" I ask her.
She nods at me slowly. "Y-yeah. Who are you?"

She invites me in after I've told her the reason why I was there. She was just as shocked as I was and a little speechless. Selena was a ptetty girl and she seemed nice, it was a shame to know that she spent endless days and nights in the hospital, just waiting for a miracle. And Sterling was her miracle.
"So.. again.. the kidneys that I have.. are.. your husbands?" she turns to me once I have taken a seat on the leather couch.
"Yeah.. it may seem crazy but.. yeah," I slowly tell her, nodding my head. What else was there to say?
"Wow," she breathes. "I mean, I know that I got a kidney from a guy and everything.. how did he.. um.. " She didnt want to say the word but I knew what she meant.
"He got shot. In the chest," I answer, not looking at her and instead, fumbling with my hands. "He was a police officer.. and it just happened."
"Oh.. I'm sorry," she says apologetically.
"Its alright.. I mean, I barely know you, but you're here right now and you're alive." I try to put on a smile for her and she nods.
"Yeah.. I thought that I was going to never see graduation. I was getting weaker with everyday.." Selena looks down for a few seconds and I didnt know what to say at the point. "Thanks.. for giving me a second chance to live," she tells me. She looks at me and our eyes meet.
"I had nothing to do with it.. It was my husband and he should be the one you thank," I say.
"Yeah.. but I mean, you agreed to donate his organs and you probably helped save others as well. That was a very brave and self-less thing to do." She gives me a small smile and then gets up. Hmm. I guess she was right. I smile to myself a bit, feeling better already.
"I wasnt sure if you'd want to meet me and all.." I start off as she goes into the kitchen. She comes back with two glasses of lemonade. She offers me one.
"I'm so glad that I got to meet you. Really," she says. She sits down across from me again and puts her legs up on the couch, stretching them out. We talk for a bit and she tells me more about herself. I told her anything that she wanted to know and anything about Sterling as well. She was a curious girl. But she was very fun to be with.
"Who's stuff are those? On the front porch? All the toys?" I ask her.
When I said this, I noticed that she had gotten more tensed. "Oh. Its, um, complicated."
"I didn't mean to--" I start off but she waves her hand at me, continuing.
"My daughter, Abby, likes to play out there with them all.." she trails off and a smile appears across her face, allowing her to relax a bit.
This surprises me. A lot. "Aw.. thats cute. How old is she?"
"She just turned 1.. My parents took her out and should be coming back in a bit.." She pauses. "I was scared that I wouldnt see her grow up.. and now.. just.. you have no idea how much of an impact these kidneys have had on me."
"Well I'm glad." I smile at her. "Abby's lucky that she has such a strong mommy."
I look up at the clock and see that its almost 7pm. "I didnt notice how fast the time had gone by. I need to go." I get up with my purse and she gets up too.
"Maybe you should come by for dinner sometime. I'm sure my parents would like to meet you, too," she suggests.
"That sounds great." We exchange numbers and then I was out the door, going into my car with a satisfied smile on my face. But on the other side, I still ached to know more about this girl.
