What Hope for the Future - Afghanistan

In his dusty corn field in Afghanistan, a farmer tells us that the Taliban have at last brought peace. To him the Mujahadeen were marauders out to harass the local population. On the rocky, crater ridden road to Kabul, we stop a Taliban judge on his bicycle to ask him why girls are not allowed to attend school. After a prayer, he replies, "When normal conditions return, the women will once more be allowed to receive religious education." After 6 years in Pakistan, a doctor returns to his family home now lying in ruins. When the Mujahadeen launched their very first attack on Kabul, he hid with his family in a basement for 3 days and nights. A teacher reveals how she was beaten by Taliban with rifles for having her face uncovered. A car full of dusky Taliban soldiers stare at our camera. The brown spool of confiscated audio tapes lies strewn across the street. On a road outside Kabul, a UN mine remover lies scraping the earth from around a small crater. An ambulance stands ready for any casualties. Frustrated, the Director tells how the Taliban recycle the mines as soon as they are removed. A report exposing the hopes and fears of a war weary nation.
