This project began in 1998. It was inspired years ago by Mikhail Kalatozov's cinematic poem ''I am Cuba" ("Soy Cuba"), a classic that interpreted the spirit and fervor of the Cuban revolution in moving pictures.
This is a poetic journey through Cuba four decades after the film was shot. It takes us from the streets of Havana to remote villages, to provinces where zafra is going on, the sugar cane season.
Before it is Cuba's turn to enter the time of changes, Mikhail Evstafiev hopes to produce an intimate portrait of the vibrant yet fragile Cuban soul, to tell about life as it is now (and will never be the same in the future) -- with all its hardships, straightforward, innocent and naïve.
A photograph is a reflection of how one views the world around him. It can only describe the things a human being, a photographer is prepared to see.
Jose Marti once wrote:
"Nobody can be more perfect than the sun.
The sun burns with the same light that warms.
The sun has spots.
The ungrateful speak only of the spots. The grateful speak of the light."
