This is my 1 1/2 yr old male beagle. He makes this weird wheezing/asthma sounding cough. It lasts a few seconds and happens randomly.

I've read about reverse sneeze and kennel cough(i'm sure it's not the latter).

anyhow, things i've done to calm this down a bit since there's no solution.
1 - changed beds, he used to sleep in that one shown in video that has too much poofy. now it's a flatter pillow one.
2 - whenever he does wheeze , i cover his entire nose with my hand , this forces the dog to swallow and he stops
3 - my dog now knows to swallow each time he gets these fits.

  • I have an 8 yr old Basset Hound who JUST started doing this about 2 weeks after I moved from the dry desert southwest to greener, wetter, Austin, TX. I'm thinking the onset has to be related to the move, maybe an allergic reaction to the climate change, mold or something. I have also noticed labored and rapid shallow breathing since these attacks started. Anyone else have those sypmtoms too? Need to find a good vet here I guess, but these videos and comments are really helpful-thanks all.

  • @debbwagg I too live in a very wet and humid area. But from what my vet told me, this is a thing custom to beagles & hounds. has to do with a flab on the back of their throats. when my dog does it, i cover his nose and massage his throat to force him to swallow. once he swallows he's good to go.

  • My beagle does this, usually she will wake us up around 4-5 am and she has little attacks. She freaks herself out when it happens and we usually have to snap her out of it. Hers last up to 2 minutes but sometimes only 10 seconds. Its either reverse sneezing or I had a vet tell me a deviated septum. I was told by another vet that she has an extra flap or excessive tissue in her nose and it irritates easier. Hopes this helps.

  • I have found that by simply covering my dog's nose during his episode he will stop. Seems like that extra flag you mentioned gets in the way of his breathing so if you cover his nostrils it will force him to swallow thereby the flap readjusts and allows him to breath normally.

  • mine does that too every once in a while

  • I finally found the solution to control my dog's weird asthma (reverse sneezing).

    I changed his bed.

Since he was a puppy , he'd sleep in those big pillowy beds.

He's now been sleeping in a flat bed that doesn't gather dust and his weird asthma thing has slowed down remarkably.

  • My dog does the exact same thing ! he is a beagle too ! He is about 2 yrs. old I have no clue what it is ! Alot of resouces say its a inward sneeze...Idk !

  • My beagle does the exact same thing - it's very random. Happens when he scarfs his food, happens in his sleep, happens when he's playing. Vet says it's common - like a reverse sneeze. I notice that he panics a little bit sometimes while it's happening which seems to make it worse. I just pet him until it goes away. Doesn't last long, but kind of scary the first time I saw it! My pitt-bull mix does the same too, but not as often.

  • Notice how the dog stopped as soon as the light went on. I assure you it is stress related. If the dog is tense it won't swallow. It just wants reassurance. It doesn't matter where you massage. I massage my dog's ears. It always stops.

  • Oh and Backwards Sneezes are VERY common in the Beagle breed he said as well..

  • @lynnebourne Incorrect unlike apparently every1 on the net wen my Beagle wen threw this i took him to a vet with tapes of the attack he was having. the vet said simply he is having what they call a backwards sneeze you treat it the same way you would treat allergy's with Benedryl.

  • This is purely caused by stress in the dog. Just rub his ears and jaw to de-stress him and let him know he is OK and not alone.

  • @BigCJFan don't freak out, its like us having a sneezing attack, theirs is just backwards, its called reverse sneezing, my beagle does it too and she'll do it for minutes, but to calm them down and make it stop, you can massage their throat, like kind of just rub under their head by their throat, it seems to help with my beagle

  • my beagle does that too, one time she did it for like minutes at a time so i reasearched about it, also, instead of putting your hand on their wet gooey nose, (lol) you can kind of massage their throat and it calms them down

  • Poor litlle dog i hope hes gonna be ok

  • This is very similar to what my beagle does only his seem to last for minutes and his muscles seem to constrict. I don't know if he's having a seizure or what it is but it freaks me out when it happens and it happens frequently.
