Sara Lee to outsource certain activities

Sara Lee Corporation said it plans to outsource certain business-process activities that will eliminate about 700 jobs that are currently handled by company employees or contractors.

About a dozen of the layoffs will be at Sara Lee's Downers Grove headquarters, where the company employs about 1,000 people, according to a Sara Lee spokesman. The company has roughly 44,000 employees worldwide.

The company said it will outsource work in certain transaction-processing chores from its North American and European finance operations, as well as applications development and maintenance work handled by its Global Information Services operation.

The company is also contracting out indirect-procurement activities that it handles in-house.

The plan is to help reduce annual company costs by up to $250 million in the next three years.
