When the submarine sinks, the ballast tank is filled with water; when it rises, the tank is emptied. Based on our calculations, using Archimedes principle, we decided that the capacity of the ballast would be one litre.

The mechanism for the rising and sinking of the submarine is a simple circuit which allows the reversal of current flowing into a windshield motor, and hence its rotation. The motor can rotate clockwise or anticlockwise; filling the ballast in one direction and empting it in the other. We have used a combination of two-way switches to achieve this current reversal.
