I challenge the view that this was an anti-art movement, as well as the idea that its purpose was destruction and demoralization. There is actually a paradox present here. Given that what was left to use for art was mostly debris, as a result of WWI, the Dadaists took what they could find and made something that requires deep context and understanding of all that came before it in the 19th century to understand. Constructing something from ruins has an aesthetic beauty to it, yes?

Wasn't the whole point of the dada movement to upheave the snobbery of the existing art community?

Of course it can't be said definitively that JarrY inspired the movement. However it seems obvious to me he made a contribution to the philosophy of dadaist art long before it existed. And in my personal, unprofessional opinion, he deserves a single mention when discussing its history. You are of course entitled to disagree, as are the countless authors with much more authority you've read.

So from this example, it looks like dada is stream-of-consciousness gibberish. And boring word association games.

I should clear up that I'm referring to most of these comments when I say "word association." I mean, it looks like everyone took a look at some of the things on his desk , wrote them down and added other words that are triggered in his mind when he hears those words. Uh, I mean, dadadadada....pencil sharpener stapler.
