Aeroméxico Flight 498 is descending into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for landing. Meanwhile, a privately-operated Piper Archer takes off from an airfield in nearby Torrance. The Archer unwittingly enters LAX airspace but the air traffic controller does not notice it due to a distraction by another light aircraft on his radar screen. Over the residential district of Cerritos the Archer hits Flight 498's horizontal stabilizer, shearing off the top of its cockpit and destroying half of the tail of Flight 498. The badly damaged DC-9 rolls inverted and plummets into the houses below. Everyone on board the two aircraft perishes as well as 15 people on the ground.

  • Hey there - have you got the air crash investigation of Egyptair 990 I think it was. Was a fascinating case. The really thought the pilot may have committed suicide - a sickening thought really! I would like to see this episode again if you can put it up

New Series of Air Crash on soon - Season 5 I believe. Should be a good watch though I do feel sad thinking what these people went through. Hope they all rest in peace and it goes to show life is real precious. Get out there and live people :)

  • egyptair990 was actually season 4 i just dont have it ye

  • It is entirely possible that Walter White, the "useless" ATC only saw the Grumman aircraft on radar. An older radar that other ATC workers stated was a bit flaky. I wouldn't go and fault him out of hand. That guy was training on a slow day and had two curveballs thrown at him. Now he has to live with the deaths of almost 200 people. I feel sorry for that guy.

Being an ATC, you have to be right all the time in tough conditions, it's not a job I'd want to do. Cut Mr. White some slack.

  • When flying in "Indian Country", you need every available eye and ear in the cockpit to scope out the area in every conceivable direction. The students and their instructors might be distracted. Other pilots might be confused. The "Squawk Ident." should be mandatory for all aircraft entering these areas so as to grab the attention of the controllers. Really sad that this crash was so avoidable. It had been a beautiful day to fly...

  • @Truthseeker4449 Yeah, because no one sees the need for new technology or new procedures until a tragedy like this takes place. It took THIS disaster to teach everybody that the 'see and avoid' technique is totally insufficient to keep mid-air collisions from occurring. TCAS itself experienced serious growing pains, it wasn't adopted correctly right away. That problem wasn't rectified until the Uberlingen mid-air collision, episode titled 'Deadly Crossroads'

  • A frikkin shame that a disaster like this one has to happen for corrective measures to go into place. But then again, the word 'accident' is in our vocabulary for a reason. They happen even when we employ sophisticated technologies & procedures. RIP to all the victims of mid air collisions, you didn't die in vain. You've saved countless of lives.

  • infact, there has been a mid-air collision here in the same area not so long ago between two small aircraft...

  • @mickderkskouta I watched that episode. I think it was over Switzerland.

  • 1 The radar was too old 2 walter white was not at Fault 3 the pilot of the grumman intruded in the TCA the moron new better and i hope they threw some serious charges on the grumman tiger pilot for being a dork and as for the Kramers were at fauly for not following the flight path what a idiot and look what happened he entered the controlled airspace and crashed with th DC9

  • what a tragedy

  • The living think they're so fucking smart.

  • correct me if I am wrong, there has never been a time when new decvie was adopted right away,
