SMALL WORLD PROJECT ( http://www.myspace.com/smallworldproject )

Theres no doubt about it: Its a small world — and its especially small at SMALL WORLD PROJECT performances, where everyone plays small-scale instruments to produce rare and compelling musics of the world. SÉBASTIEN DUFOURs charango and ukulele (MG3 : Montréal Guitare Trio, Intakto, Vent du Nord) take centre stage, accompanied by PATRICK GRAHAMs miniature percussion section (La Nef, Autorickshaw, Ramasutra) on the cajonito, kanjira, gattam, carillon and other diminutive devices. Resonating through it all is FRÉDÉRIC SAMSON (Musa Dieng Kala, Vent du Nord), on his double bass — a big, contrasting exception in this small world of music, whose enveloping depths will balance the voices of the other instruments.

Drawing its inspiration from the four corners of the globe, the Small World Projects music vibrates with Brazilian samba beats, Chilean folklore, flamenco Andalou, Hawaiian Island melodies, and the musical strains of Morocco, Senegal, India — with some good old American bluegrass in the mix. Primarily scored by ensemble leader Sébastien Dufour, this trios original music is all about decompartementalizing musical styles by integrating pure world elements, classical music and jazz.

Winner of the Prix Étoile Galaxie 2008 at Festival des Musiques et du Monde in Montreal, in June 2008 the ensembles first album will be launched internationally on the Fidelio Audio label. The trios future projects include the Montreal Jazz Festival this summer and a performance at the Grand Théâtre in Quebec City next fall. The Small World Projects music has already been broadcast on CBC radio and on Radio-Canada.

The Small World Project ennobles small instruments by presenting virtuoso music from all over the world that is both rare and lyrical. Yes — small is still beautiful!
