A very short documentation of a neat place, with high geological significance.
Red Rock Canyon State Park located just west of Las Vegas Nevada. "An oasis in a neon desert", the canyon is what remains of ancient ocean floor.
Over many millions of years the sea bed was erected an average of 6200 feet above current sea level due to tectonic movement as the Pacific Plate began its dive under the North American Continent. Forming, what is now a variety of mountain ranges along the western coast of North America.
Most of the higher ridges are mainly constructed of sedimentary limestone and its horizontal bands can be seen from a distance. The famous "Red Rock" is made up of oxidized sandstone, which literally rusted as ocean levels dropped and the minerals were subject to a new environment. Approximately 180 million years ago massive sand dunes were lithified, giving the outcrop is unique shape. These features are known as Aztec Sandstone. The oxidizing minerals were also noticed by an estimated six different Native American cultures, and were used to form the popular "hand print" Petroglyphs that can be seen today.
Red Rock Canyon is also home to the Pacific Ponderosa. One of four subspecies of the Ponderosa Pine. In the cool, moist shadows of the canyon walls stand the last of the Pacific Ponderosa. Thriving on the mild wet winters, and battling the hot dry summers, the canyon offers the only sustainable environment for this species in South Western Nevada. A species that has been native to the area since the last ice age, and once covered the entire valley floor of what is now modern day Las Vegas.
Although i did not capture the Ponderosa due to technical issues, the well known Joshua Tree can be seen in the beginning of the segment.
