sweet. del toro is mexican and hes not a catholic, hes not afiliated to any religious institution,i dont think this movie does any religious references.this is a brilliant film .

along with the end scene where she appears to be in a cathedral almost as in a church ..seems to be religious references

This has to be one of the best movies ever made..the interpretation of what it truly means is up for grabs..I always saw it as a semi religious reference since the director is spanish and most likely catholic..this girls self sacrifice for others even the ones who treated her horribly seemed the be a reference to Christ..
