*** Mystery solved, figured out that spinning breaks thru the sandy rock areas

Trying to figure out how to save this guy.

I don't know how to blast thru this rock to save this guy. I thought maybe ramming thru it as fast as I could would work, but nope....I tried the grappling hook too, that doesn't work. I don't get it. It's probably super easy too, I'm just not seeing it.

Thanks. No idea about that spinning move.. Rotate/spin doesn't really explain it when looking at the ship Controls.
