This is Daniel Amato's Opelu Wa'a Kaukahi. This is a model of a single hull Hawai'ian canoe traditionally used for fishing. I have harvested a branch of Hau tree (3 diameter) from North Shore Oahu and it has been curing for at least one month. Hau is traditionally used for both canoe building and medicine. The wa'a is named is Haumana. This means student or apprentice in Hawaiian which is appropriate since I am a student of the wa'a. The 'iako and kia were constructed using local bamboo. Hemp fiber was used to lash the la to the kia. A variety of tools were used including table saws, sanders, a dremel, and chisel set. Oil was used as a finish. Enjoy!
