This is me shooting the Model 686 I used to have about a year or two ago. It was the first handgun I recall buying new and was a formidable 6-inch .357 Magnum. If I were to buy another .357, I would definitely go with another Smith & Wesson although I'd probably go for an older 6-inch or 4-inch model like the Model 19 or Model 66, etc. The L-Frame is a bit heavy and I could do without the internal safety lock that my new model had.

You'll notice that the second round didn't fire initially. I had adjusted the mainspring to see if I'd get a better trigger pull, but I apparently had adjusted it a hair too far as it wasn't popping primers 100% of the time. I later went back to setting the spring closer to the way it came factory and in retrospect, I doubt doing so is really worth the small change in trigger pull.

  • Opening the cylinder after a misfire is a great way to get your hand blown off. A good rule to follow is, wait 10 seconds with the gun pointed down range then you can safely inspect it knowing that the round isn't a "cooker." Nice gun though!

  • @guitartricky Well, that is true and I thought about that after I posted the video. I guess I knew instinctively that it was a light primer strike since I had adjusted the mainspring. I never have encountered a "cooker" with modern factory ammunitiion.

  • internal lock system was the deciding factor in my 686 vs gp100 decision i had to make! I cannot be the only one that passed on a new smith and bought a ruger because of it! Still no replacing a S&W 629 even with the stupid lock!

  • Hate to niggle, but you need to learn to use the left thumb to cock it.

  • Squib load???

  • @guitartricky Safety sally needs to get with the 21st century .

  • @Agent0061958 I know what you mean, hindsight is 20/20! Believe it or not I've had that happen to me on my 686 with factory ammo with the mainspring not adjusted. Luckily it wasn't a cooker but just a dud. I guess you never know. Have fun and be safe brother!
