After "Educating Rita" (1983), Lewis Gilbert adapted another play by Willy Russell. Like Gilbert's "Alfie" (1966), "Shirley Valentine" (1989) is also in a habit of talking to the camera on a very scarcastic tone.
Pauline Collins is irresistible, but the play seems to have lost some of its acid humour when brought to the screen.
Nice little film anyway.

Johana Lumley makes a very brief appearance and don't expect to see Tom Conti during the first hour of the film.

  • Jane divorced her husband. I never knew him, it was before I met her. Apparently she came home from work unexpectedly one morning and found him in bed with the milkman. Honest to God, the milkman ! But from that day forward I've noticed she never takes milk in her tea.

  • this was such a strange film

  • "You've gone round the bend."

"Oh, I do hope so, I've always wanted to travel.."

  • on my facebook and friends reunited profile i have put shirley valentine as my favourite film, its not just women who feel trapped in relationships with kids and bills and work, i always longed to live somewhere hot by the med and away from this crap we call life, i missed the boat because of one thing or another but when i watch this film ,for an hour or so i am the male shirley, tom conti is exeptional, as is joanne lumley, so many issues in what appears to be a light film, love it

  • @mthurlby Thanks for sharing that. I think you must be truly an "enlightened" and very special person.

  • IT'S CALLED THE F PLAN LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah Greece looks wonderful. Beats living in Britain thats for sure.

  • I'm so glad a friend of mine sent me a video about Greece today, because it made me think of this movie, and I had to "relive" it. It's such a wonderful "woman's movie" but if you're a man and you like and understand it - you must be very special, indeed. (Seriously). This is truly a classic - for any woman who ever felt trapped by life...
