Bauhaus World Heritage - Gropius in Dessau

The city of Dessau made it possible in 1925 for Gropius and his friends to put their visions and theories into reality. After the move from fascist Weimar where he and his modern views were no longer welcome, he was received with open arms in Dessau.
In the old workshops the present day postgraduates organise exhibitions on their view of the compact city and how that should all be handled. Themes like 'Urban Service Scapes' and 'Housing as Interface' routinely show up.

Gropius not only designed a school building, but also a student restaurant, a theatre, sports facilities and a student house. Gropius' world had become fact, his vision 'buildings shape life' could now longer be evaded. Gropius architects had another assignment to fulfil for the municipality of Dessau. He won a hotly contested design contest to build a residential neighbourhood. His vision of the spatial layout and efficient building appealed to the authorities.
