@kingmike40 I can! And curvy letters, too. I plan to do at least one other video on making curves with this technique.

basswood? great job demystifing letter carving. Probably the only carving I am really excited to get into so I can "sign" my work.

@skeeterd5150 Yep, that is basswood. Chip carving knives work well with lettercarving, too. I recommend Wayne Barton's methods for doing so.

@VillageCarpenter I am switching back and forth between this video and your chip carving video.(BTW: You have the most professional sounding voice over voice I have heard in the wood working internet world:)) I am thinking if I am only going to do text carving chip carving tools are the way to go. Tell me if I am wrong. I work in cherry primarily bc it is easily had in VA and BEAUTIFUL. You could just stab in with a primary chip knife, correct? It seems the most frugal with my tool budget.

@skeeterd5150 Thanks! :o) You can carve cherry with a chip carving knife, but it will make your hand more tired than if you're carving basswood. You'll also need to strop the blade a lot more often. I have chip carved Swiss Pear (a little harder than cherry) and had to strop after every cut. With harder wood, be extra careful that you don't break the tip of your knife. If you do that, you'll need to start all over with re-sharpening the edge.
