  • I remember this I had worked on the Roger Blough and later the PM41 and Undaunted that year. If the old Mac had problems with this imagine the how long it would have taken that new Mac. I remember them using the Reliance and I think a ULS tug or the Joyce L. VanEnkevort.

  • they shouldn't be running during this time of year i mean look! and this thing is longer than that titanic and cant even move.

  • I'll never forget that adventure. We started at 5 in the morning approaching the stuck vessel. A great opportunity for the most amazing photos ...

I was on board the Tug Reliance during this "rescue-mission" ~ icebreaking alongside the ship at sub-zero temperatures, numerous attempts ... and yes ~ it was the Joyce L. VanEnkevort who finally got the mighty Edgar B. Speer freed and going again.

  • That year i was on the SS Philip R Clarke as a deckhand.

Oct to Nov i was on the Speer as a watchman.

  • I was shure heart broken when they retired the mackinaw

  • Thats a long day for the captain.

  • my uncle larry was the captain on the Speer

  • Semper Acacia Ve here Broke a lot of Ice with the Mack

  • Yeah that was my 2 cents too. LOL!

  • It doesn't make sense for the Mac to be attempting a tow of such a large vessel as the Speer. In such tight quarters as the rock cut, it did make sense to increase the flow of water from Lake Superior. My 2cents...

  • I remember that day well. I was an SN(Seaman) on the Mac. We couldnt pull the E. B. Spear out. We broke all of our towing bridles trying. The Soo had to release more water into the river, to get the Spear moving agian. I was on the helm when that happend. when the currents from the extra water got to us, the helm got all strange on me. That was not fun!
