I always thought this was a Christian rock song that made it to mainstream because of Genesis' popularity. I just assumed Phil Collins was a die-hard Christian or something. I only recently found out this song is actually a mockery of televangelism. After I saw the video, the song makes a lot more sense. I think it's great. They aren't making fun of religion, just televangelists. I remember watching some of those guys on TV promising you the world if you would just send them money.

You should search 'Phil Collins Room 101'. Funny show, but he talks a bit more about why he wrote the song, and like you said it's a total mockery of those con-men televangelists, rather than an attack on religion itself.
