For those of us who were there ... and just about anyone in London or Britain (or much of the world) at the time, this is fixed as one of the Great Moments of our lives. The occasion was Mandela's 70th birthday, 1988. He was still in prison; apartheid ruled in South Africa. At this point in the concert (in Wembley Stadium), Stevie Wonder was due. There was a backstage problem and the relatively unknown Tracy Chapman was sent out. The rest is history; Mandela was free a couple of years later.
