If you are easily upset, skip the intro an go directly to 00:31. All "seizures" are reconstructions of real events.

This video is about what happens in the brain during an epileptic seizure. As far as possible subjective experiences with seizures have been coupled with objective findings in EEG's. The EEG samples I've chosen to show, I am permitted to use, so I don't violate any professional secrecy.

The video is my very first videoproject ever. It had litterally no budget at all. Sound could definitely be better, but bear with me - I hopefully will be better next time.

FAQs about epilepsy:
Definition: Recurrent, spontaneously occurring clinical seizures of cerebral dysfunction (loss of control), primarily caused by neuronal hypersynchrony (meaning rythmic bioelectrical outbursts from the brain cells). I.e. one have to have at least 2 incidents with loss of control before the diagnose epilepsy can be used.

No. Epilepsy most often doesn't hurt until after the seizure. The pain will be due to excessive muscle and brain activity, injuries and the general lack of wellbeing that follows most seizures.
If a cry is heard, it arises from air that is forced through the closed glottis by the tensed respiratory musculature - the diagphram and the chest muscles. It is NOT a cry of pain.

Having a tonic/clonic (stiffening/jerking) seizure feels like having run a marathon in 3 minutes or been ran over by a truck. But during the seizure the person is unconscious and don't feel anything.

PARTIAL SEIZURE: NOT half a seizure, but a seizure involving only a part of the brain. The part involved will dictate the clinical symptoms.
-SIMPLE PARTIAL SEIZURE: Characterized by preserved consciousness.
-COMPLEX PARTIAL SEIZURE: Characterized by impaired consciousness.
Both types can develop into generalized seizures and is then denoted PARTIAL SEIZURES w/SECONDARY GENERALIZATION.

Sometimes froth around the patients mouth is seen. This is due to excessive salivation, caused by the brain dysfunction, a very disturbed respiration and the jerking tongue that beats it into foam.

Epilepsy does not usually negatively affect IQ

Swallowing the tongue is not possible, so don't put anything into the mouth of the person. It can do more harm than biting oneself will do.

  • Doctor you or someone can translate this video in Spanish

  • @lauravids - I would be glad to add Spanish subtitles, but I need someone to translate the English into Spanish. If someone in this forum is capable of this task, please post me a message, and I'll forward the English text. (I don't know anybody who are able to translate this into Spanish.)

  • hey bro, looks like you fell down and dropped your shit.

  • Hi Doctor you or someone can translate this video in Spanish please... Thanks

  • AEBNmikael, that was a grand gesture and very much appreciated. Thank you! I might need you in the future.

Currently the site is already being programmed, but I will keep you in mind. However, there might be others out there that could make possible use of your skills just now.

  • let me know if you need any help with the site. I'm a web UI/UX designer that also has the wonderful gift of TLE.

  • It was January 2002 ...

  • I'm doing very fine, thank you. Ever since I learned that a certain diet kept me seizure free I have stuck to that. Haven't had a single s. since January 2008 (started dieting March). As you can see in my vid I'm very comfortable with the E-issue. In fact, I plan to launch a new site fall/winter 2009 for ppl to meet, get information, ask questions and get therapy for whatever "soft" problems the epilepsy causes. The core issues of treatment is still left to the docs, but it will be a supplement.

  • Thank you for informing people of this horrible disease. Hope you're doing wonderful! :)

  • I do. Since the age of seven. I have a syndrome called juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. I also had partial s., which is quite rare with this syndrome. Being extremely sensitive to chemicals I have been intoxicated from my medicine a couple of times. The last time Keppra (med.) cost me my job b/c no one realized that I was intoxicated. (Believe it or not, but I was working in hospital close to neurologists that didn't see a thing!).

I've been working with ppl. with epilepsy since 1988 more or less.
