EmploymentCrossing.com Parents of children insured by Medicaid and PeachCare have sued the State of Georgia, claiming that their children are to be denied dental care because the dentists who care for them -- specifically, the Atlanta-based Kool Smiles dental group -- are to be dropped from the Medicaid and PeachCare insurance plans. The Georgia Department of Community Health replied in an email to reporters, saying they are investigating complaints against Kool Smiles. The complaints involve allegations by the parents of patients and by other dentists concerning poor care delivery and over-utilization of services, resulting in inflated billing. Kool Smiles chief dental officer, Dr. David Strange, issued a statement saying the states attack is a weak and feeble attempt to take the publics mind off the fact that 71,000 children who are Kool Smiles patients insured by Medicaid and PeachCare will be without a dental home Dr. Strange said the dental chain has been audited multiple times by the states two Care Management Organizations, and has not been informed of any adverse findings. But the two CMOs, WellCare of Georgia and the Peach State Health Plan, cancelled their contracts with Kool Smiles to provide Medicaid and PeachCare dental services in Georgia because they were trying to make more efficient use of their resources, not because of any complaints of poor care or faulty billing.
