When it first debuted in 1993, it may have been a visual standout from the numerous other Street Fighter 2″ clones of the time but by todays standards it barely even passes. My first major problem with this Virtual Console release is the fact that we got the inferior Genesis version which came out a full year later than the superior SNES version we should have got. Though the SNES version wasnt void of flaws itself, it was light years better than this one.

The most important thing about a fighting game is the controls, right? Well, in most fighting games that is absolutely true. ClayFighter isnt so much about finessing the joystick and artfully throwing together combos as it is spamming opponents to death with one button over and over though. Oh, sure you can try to play the game the way it was designed to be played if you feel like you may just want to sit and shout expletives at the TV in frustration for an hour or two. Or you can pick a character with long reach like Ickybod Clay and beat the game in about 20 minutes completely ignoring the stiff control altogether.

Whats something positive I can say about the game? ClayFighter does have some comic elements that may elicit a half-chuckle. Nope, that still sounds negative. How about: ClayFighter is a game that gives you some truly unique characters to play with? Oh, I give up. If you happened to play this back in the day and are also feeling a bit nostalgic for early 90s fighting games, you can pick this up in the Virtual Console Store for 800 Wii points. Unless thats you, I would stay away from this game.

  • Was there any reason given why the Gensis version was used and not the SNES version?

Then again it's nintendo and they have a habit of making bad decisions.
