Kerongcong maestro Gesang Martohartono, whose song Bengawan Solo gained fame all the way to Japan and other Asian countries passed away Thursday 20 May 2010 shortly after 6 pm, in Surakarta, Central Java. He was 92.
Gesang who could not read musical notation, composed Bengawan Solo in 1940.
In 2009 Gesang said "unfortunately (the river) is not as beautiful as before".
