Thursday night, January 5, 2012 with FDNY:

As we were arriving, Staten Island transmitted a 10-75 for a large shed with exposures. This fire was not within reach.

As we were on arriving in Brooklyn, units were sent out to Eastern Parkway for an auto accident with fire and extrication. It wasn't within reach for the initial chase, but we came across it about an hour later. Crime scene tape could be seen for blocks around the fatal accident.

The first good chase came in around 11:24 AM - Brooklyn Box 0917 for 1609 Bergen Street for a 10-75 on the first floor of a 4-story O/M/D.

The next fire we chased without success was Queens box 1329 with an address of 237 Beach 86 Street for a 10-75 on the second floor of a vacant private dwelling. We made it close but turned around when the under control was transmitted.

We were sitting on Linden Blvd when a signal five seven came across for a car fire at 51st and Farragut Street. Engine 310 and Ladder 174 arrived to find a fully involved car. Within ten minutes, the fire was out and the companies went home.

At 03:24 hours, Brooklyn box 2598 was transmitted for a commercial fire reported in a restaurant located at 4208 18th Avenue. A second caller reported a car fire behind the restaurant. BN 48 transmitted a 10-75 after the ladder companies (147 & 148) went to the roof to find smoke coming from the roof. BN 48 put all hands to work for a fire on the second floor. The fire was suspicious and the Fire Marshall's office was notified.

  • @signal99 A guy who wears his SCBA at trash can or brush fires can still get cancer; carcinogens settle on your gear. Not saying you shouldn't protect yourself when you need to but come on; cancer is a risk we all take and should be compensated for if we get it.

  • We save our air for structural fires. Because we're so spread out we aren't able to quickly resupply and the Mask unit only turns out for 3rd alarm or better. If we use it up at a car fire and get something on the way back to quarters we're screwed and so is whoever needs us. That said, if it's a real nasty one throwing a lot of smoke or is anything bigger than a car (van, bus) SCBA should be used. But we have bigger problems than car fires in Brooklyn.

  • FF not puting PPE on is an old story, but i do think your right, The officers should be held responsible for all his men......................THE CHIEF should just send out a SOP order. SCBA at all fires..............

  • I am so sick and tired of watching videos of firefighters not wearing the PPE that they are issued and then calling their illnesses job related when they find out they have cancer! Either wear it 100% of the time or sign off on ever complaining that your illness is job related.

  • @FirstDue Completely agree FirstDue. Carcinogens kill more firefighters than fire does. This is something that should be common knowledge by now.

  • I have the outmost respect for the FDNY and am a avid buff, along being a 28 year career FF. I just find it hard the Brothers are not using SCBA's at auto fires.......

  • I bet NYC is one heck of a place to fire chase!

  • I love this series!
