John "Big Rud" or "Johnny O" Orleud Known for having one of the smoothest swings in the game, as well as for wearing a helmet even when fielding, Olerud was an excellent line drive hitter to all parts of the field. He had one of the best batting eyes in baseball, averaging 92 walks a season and exceeding 100 four times, and is one of only two players to hit for the cycle in both the American and National Leagues. Despite being one of the slowest players in MLB (he had a record nine seasons with more than 400 plate appearances and no stolen bases), Olerud was also a very intelligent base runner.

  • Johnny O is the best ever

  • That swing is a thing of beauty. Such a great all around player.

  • Proud say Olerud is part of my family..........going to model my swing after him :)

  • Man I miss when Olerud played for the Mariners. They didn't suck then.

  • Please tell me the name of the song playing. I absolutely love it! Thank you so much for posting a fantastic video of my favorite player. John was such a class act on the diamond and is an amazing person off the diamond! Thank you!

  • I am so glad to have grown up watching Johnny O at the Dome.

  • I remember when the Mariners let him go. I was bummed out. The Mariners were so stupid it's unbelievable. I always thought he would retire in a Mariners uniform. I guess he was too good for that to happen.

  • That was Olerud's 8th Career Grand Slam (and his last) and his 250th Career Home Run hit on July 30th 2005. He hit 5 more Home Runs that season to retire with 255.

  • Totally cool. I've been looking for a video of Olerud to show my son. His coach says he has a swing like Olerud and he didn't know who he was. Now I can show him this clip. Thanks for putting it up!

  • the greatest player ever
