Puffinus puffinus.
A medium-sized shearwater in the seabird family Procellariidae. This species breeds in the North Atlantic, with major colonies on islands and coastal cliffs around Great Britain and Ireland. These birds have been nesting along the Atlantic coast of northeastern North America since about 1970. They nest in burrows, laying one white egg which is only visited at night to avoid predation by large gulls. They form life-long monogamous pair-bonds. Flies in the typically "shearing" flight of the genus, dipping from side to side on stiff wings with few wingbeats, the wingtips almost touching the water. This bird looks like a flying cross, with its wing held at right angles to the body, and it changes from black to white as the black upperparts and white undersides are alternately exposed as it travels low over the sea.

Adult description:
White mark behind the eye and the extension of the wing tips beyond the tail.
Head, neck, back and the upper part of the wings are gold in coloring and the plumage is brown to black.
Their throats, bellies and under wing areas are white.
Their hooked shaped bills are black, with the tail and eyes also being dark in color.
Does not exhibit a black capped appearance as does the Greater Shearwater because the head and back are the same color.

  • just heard The God Delusion.... and the story about some students, who were afraid of these sounds :)

  • I delibaerately sought out this video after reading the extremely funny passage from "The God Delusion". This "diabolic" bird actually converted one of Dawkins´s fairly well educated contemporaries into priesthood. Hilarious :)

    Saudações direto do Brasil

  • I came here after reading The God Delusion's chapter where a young man hears this bird and thinks is Satan himself talking to him. I was raised catholic myself, and really.... really, from all the explanations you can give yourself about a creepy sound, at night, in a dark forest you do choose Satan? If you had to choose a crazy explanation for this sound, I'd have chosen a giant mutant owl hungry for blood and brains. That is scarier than Satan!

  • Ridiculous. It doesn't sound like screaming at all. It sounds like puppies and penguins.

  • The god delusion :)

  • Thumbs up if you came here because you heard about it in the god delusion.
